Travelers notebooks are one of my very favorite things in this whole entire world. Probably because I know I can customize it to fit my exact needs. If I have something I need to plan, I can just make a new insert for it!
As of now, I have a total of 8 inserts and there is more than I know I need to add in the future. I even use it as my wallet! (I’ll share more about that later.)
Wait, what? Is it possible to fit more than two inserts inside a traveler’s notebook? Yes! it is!
I know there are many seasoned planner girls out there who already know this, but I know there are a lot of new planner people out there who are just getting to know their traveler’s notebook.
Sometimes in my Etsy shop, I sell my own version of the traveler’s notebook (also known as the “FunkyDori”). Often times with my custom orders I would get asked how to add more than one notebook to a single elastic band.
Today, I’m going to show you how!
If you are not familiar with what a travelers notebook is, I recommend you check out this post.
How to Add Multiple Inserts to Your Travelers Notebook
Most standard travelers notebooks come with two elastic bands on the inside. What many don’t understand is how to hold 3 (or even 5) inserts on each band. The trick is in an extra elastic band!
Step 1. First, you will need your travelers notebook (with one of the attached elastic bands free), three separate inserts, and an additional elastic band. You could use a standard rubber band, or buy some elastic from your local craft store (I bought mine at Walmart even).
Step 2. Decide which of the three inserts you would like to be in the middle. Open that insert to the middle, and wrap the elastic band (the one attached to your traveler’s notebook) around the inside of the insert.
Step 3. Open your second insert to the middle, and wrap the unattached elastic band (or rubber band) around it. When the insert is closed, the elastic band will wrap around the middle of the insert and its outer spine.
Step 4: Open the third insert and again you will wrap the elastic band around the middle, but this time you will use the elastic band that is already attached to the 2nd insert. When you are finished, both inserts will lay side by side when closed, spine to spine, but will be joined together by the elastic band.
Step 5. Wrap the band with the two joining inserts around the main insert already attached to the traveler’s notebook. The main insert will slide right in between the other two booklets.
You should now have three inserts attached to one elastic band within your traveler’s notebook!
For those of you like me who need to see it so you can understand it, I created a video tutorial for you to watch below.

Thanks for this quick tutorial! I don’t have a Traveler’s Notebook yet, but I use Moleskine cahiers as my bullet journals and my friend is making me a fauxdori cover to hold those. <3
Very informative!
Hello. I am totally new to this planner “thing.” Bought them for all the girls/women on my Christmas list but purchased the mini MAMBI so they would go in our purses. I can’t find anywhere to to resize all the printable so they will work with the mini or websites that have free mini downloads. Hope someone can help. Thank you. Don’t know where else to go.
Generally the printables are not made to be resized. They are typically made for specific sizes. The inserts that are on Planner Squad would possibly work in the HP Mini if you print the personal (A2) size. With the stickers, you may want to try printing them at 50-75% of their size (a setting you would change in your print settings) and see if they fit that way. Hopefully we’ll have inserts and stickers to fit the mini in the future. It’s still a new size so many shops have not yet created things in that specific size yet.
Thank u so much for your quick response. I use photo shop and will try that. I hope in the future I can just download for the mini and go.
Thank you for this tutorial!! This was so helpful. 🙂
Oh my gosh, thank you so very much for this tutorial! I literally Googled, “how do I add additional inserts to my travelers journal with one elastic?” and landed on your page. I just purchased my first traveler’s notebook for church and bible study, three hours ago! I came home and started putting it all together and then thought, there’s only one elastic, what do I do? I know have three inserts in my notebook. Thank you so much for your assistance. I love the Internet for this reason.
Best to you!
I’m so happy this helped you!!
My trick is so very simple.
Take any number of inserts you can fit into a TN without making it too bulky
F.i. if you want three inserts you can put them into One thread.
Piece of cake: just open the inserts in the middle.
Put the open inserts on top of each other.
Then thread them under One thread.
Have several elastics? Maybe you can add three inserts each?
Then you have the folds on the leather itself.
Do likewise and thread your inserts under the folds.
