Back in the day…..

As a child, I loved to draw and colour. I had drawers and drawers of paper and more pencil cases filled with felt tip pens and pencils than I care to admit. Before the adult colouring craze became a thing, the only colouring I got to do was with my siblings or niece and nephew all of which are now grown up and way past the colouring stage.

If you have been following my posts here at the Planner Squad, you’ll know that I live on a tiny island in the Mediterranean and we have zero craft stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby. When I saw a local office stationery store carrying adult colouring books, I begged my husband to buy me one for Christmas. And, he did, along with some amazing Derwent Inktense pencils.

It is now the end of July and I haven’t even used the colouring book. It is an amazing colouring book but I just don’t have the time to sit and colour with two young babies and an Etsy business to run.

A new design challenge….

I love Mandalas. They are so pretty to look at. I have attempted to draw them a few times without much success.

As a keen learner (geek) I decided to challenge myself to design a mandala using Adobe Illustrator (professional graphic design software program that I use to design the planner inserts I sell). More than 12 hours later, I had something that resembled a basic mandala. For a first time attempt, I am feeling quite proud of the final result.

Now I had an excuse to do some colouring-after all it was “work” related! Colouring the free mandala printable, however, was a totally different story. I tried my Inktense pencils but without water the pencil was just too light and with water the paper became warped and wrinkled.

I tried some cheap felt tip pens I had laying around, but they just didn’t cut it. The thick tips were not capable of staying inside the lines. In frustration and as a last result, I decided to try my Staedtler fine line pens. They worked like a dream.

I even went one step further and turned part of the mandala into a dashboard style insert for my personal planner. It was a great distraction from missing my sister who I had just seen off at the airport earlier on in the day. I got a little bit carried away and spent more than two hours colouring.

This free mandala printable comes standard in A4 which can also be printed at A5 and personal size. The A4 version has the entire mandala and is designed to be printed on A4 with the ratio set at 100%. To print in A5 simply cut the paper to size before printing and set the print ratio to 66%. I have been on vacation with no cell, internet, tv etc
basically no technology for a week. Maybe I am looking right at it… so, a little help would be appreciated.
